RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
